The graduate students in the Department of East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto will host their Fifth Annual Graduate Conference entitled "Movement: The Cultural Dynamics of East Asia" on March 5, 2005.

The conference will explore notions of movement in literature, art, philosophy, religion, politics, commerce, and demographics within and beyond China, Korea and Japan. Movement, broadly interpreted, might encompass topics such as the evolution of artistic styles; the spread of religious and philosophical ideas; political and commercial relations; displacement and migration; travel and tourism; translation and textual transmission. We shall examine East Asian cultures in flux, emerging, and under influence in all periods. All disciplines and approaches are welcome.

The conference features Prof. Zhang Longxi of City University of Hong Kong as a keynote speaker and other prominent scholars in their fields as panel discussants.
