The graduate students in East Asian Studies at the University of Toronto will host their Sixth Annual Graduate Conference entitled "Tales Told Twice: Imitation & Transgression" on March 11th, 2006.
The conference will explore notions of imitation and transgression in literature, language, history, politics, art and philosophy within and beyond China, Korea and Japan. Imitation and transgression, broadly interpreted, might encompass topics such as (but not limited to): the problem of translation and adaptation; the politics of sequels and parodies; the uses of imitation and role-playing in second-language acquisition; rewriting histories; the importation of political and economic forms; colonial mimicry and hybridity; quotation in the visual arts; the problematics of difference and repetition. All disciplines and approaches are welcome.
